  • The story begins when a ship captain by the name of Robert Walton gets stuck in ice out in the arctic. Captain Walton has been writing letters to his sister saying But I bitterly want the feeling of a friend (Shelley 7) stating that he feels lonely. In the distance he sees a man in bad shape and brings him aboard. The mans name is Victor Frankenstein and he begins to tell captain Walton his life story. 
  • Victor Frankenstein grew up in Geneva along with his parents Ms and Mr Frankenstein, along with his brother William, best friend Henry Clerval and cousin Elizabeth whom his parents expected him to marry eventually. Mr. Frankenstein had been an important figure in the government, so their family was well off.
  • What are you doing here! Ahh!
  • Frankenstein goes to a famous university in Ingolstadt where his professor named Shmael Augustus Waldman tells him to pursue science and teaches him to re-animate dead tissue. Frankenstein becomes obsessed with his studies and ignores his family.
  • On a rainy night in November Frankenstein brings a monster to life made of old body parts from a graveyard. The monster was hideous and Victor says I had selected his features as beautiful! Great god! (Shelley 58). Victor feels joy with the sense of accomplishment of bringing a monster to life but at the same time is worried of what it might do. The next morning Victor returns to his lab and the monster is gone.
  • One day while on a sightseeing trip through the mountains and glaciers with his family, Victor decides to go mountain climbing by himself and out of no where the monster appears. Victor is startle at first and wants to kill the monster but the monster convinces Victor to listen to his story. The monster says My soul glowed with love and humanity; but I am not alone, miserable alone? You my creator, abhor me (Shelley 114).
  • The monster describes how he came to life completely disoriented and how he didn't know how to speak or write. The monster said he observed the actions and dialogue of a family that lived nearby in a little cottage in the woods by peering through their window. He secretly helped with chores and provided food for them. He emphasizes having a relationship like this family by saying But where were my friends and relations? No father had watched my infant days, no mother had blessed me with smiles and caresses (Shelly 142).
  • The monster learns a lot of things from some old novels and books that Victor had in his lab and reads the papers that were in Victors lab coat, which the monster had been wearing. The papers reveal who Victor is and where he's from and how he came about to create the monster. The papers read how disgusted and horrified Victor was of the monster he had created and this doesn't make the monster feel any better.
  • One evening the monster decides to go introduce himself to the De Lacey family's blind father while the family is out. The De Lacey's is the family the monster had been observing and he knows that if he talks with the blind father he'll be able to have a conversation because the father can't see the monster. The monster says to the old man Do not dessert me in the hour of trial (Shelly 161). Felix the son returns home and sees the monster so starts beating him in hopes of getting the monster out of the cottage, the monster runs away without putting up a fight.
  • The monster begins his journey to Geneva and along the way he saves a young girl from drowning in a river. This action shows that there is not all evil in the monster and that he has the human capacity to choose right from wrong. When the monster rescues the girl from the water, the man accompanying her, suspecting him of having attacked her, shoots him in the shoulder. The monster then swears external hatred to all man kind (Shelly 169).

  • When the monster arrives in Geneva he demands a little boy to show him the way around, but when the little boy mentions that his last name is Frankenstein he kills him. The monster then blames the death on the families housekeeper Justine, by slipping a Lockett that William had been carrying into her pocket. This death cause deep emotional pain for the family and the monster states that I too can create desolation, my enemy is not invulnerable; this death will carry despair to him, and a thousand other miseries shall torment and destroy him (Shelley 171).
  • The monster finds Victor and forces him to create a female version of him so that the monster can feel the love of a companion and if Victor agrees then he'll never see the monster ever again. I am alone and miserable, man will not associate with me. My companies must be of the same species and have the same defects (Shelley 173)... Victor agrees after being moved by the reasons of the monster.
  • Victor is almost done creating the female monster but quickly stops and destroys it when he realizes the this version could become more malignant than her mate and delight, for its own sake in murder and wretchedness (Shelley 202). The monster is not happy about this and threatens Victor saying that he'll be there on his wedding day.
  • The monster is very frustrated and angry and so he kills Henery Clerval (Victor's best friend) in hopes of getting back at Victor for destroying his companion. The monster the blames the death of Henry on Victor.
  • Victor is deeply saddened at the death of Henry. Have my murderous machinations deprived you also, my dearest Henry, of life? Two I have already destroyed, other victim's await their destiny (Shelley 217). Victor goes to court for the death of Henry but is found innocent.
  • Victor and Elizabeth try to secretly have their wedding but the monster seems to always know where Victor is at all times. What will happen? Will the monster end up killing Victor or Elizabeth? Will Victor confess everything to Elizabeth and how the deaths are his fault? Who will live forever alone...!
