- Vanessa is on her way to visit her girlfriend, Olivia. Shortly after she gets on the bus, Eric sits at a comfortable distance of 2 meters away from her, according to North American norms. This is the comfortable distance for people in the social zone, since they are strangers.
- Scene 4: The Public Zone in 2018
- After arriving at Olivia's house, Vanessa is greeted by someone she has never met before. Her name is Margo and, after shaking hands, they converse at a distance of 1.5 meters. Any closer would make them feel uncomfortable since they are in the personal zone.
- Scene 5: The New Zones in 2020
- It's so nice to finally see each other again! I can't believe its been so long!
- SOCIAL DISTANCE
- Vanessa and Margo go to the living room to find Olivia. Vanessa and Olivia, who are dating, sit at a distance of about half a meter. Margo sits at a distance of about 1.5 meters from Vanessa since they only just met. Vanessa is comfortable with the personal zone with Margo and the intimate zone with Olivia.
- Scene 6: The No Zone in 2020
- After dinner at Olivia's, the girls decide to go dancing at a DJ concert. They remain 3.5 meters away from the DJ. This far distance is customary for people in the public zone.
- Two years later, COVID-19 has changed the zones. Margo, Olivia and Vanessa decide to go on a socially distanced outdoor walk instead of having dinner together as they did in 2018. They remain 2 meters away from each other despite all being close friends. In 2020, the intimate and personal zone distances have expanded dramatically.
- After their walk, they reminisce about the fun they used to have going to DJ concerts. Public health officials have deemed it unsafe to attend large social gatherings because of social distancing rules. The once called 'public zone' is no longer possible.
- I wish we could go to a DJ concert!
- Me too! It just wouldn't be safe though, Vanessa. I wouldn't feel comfortable being so close to a stranger!
