- The Kelly family moved to Avenel in the early 1860s (when Ned was about 8). Red rented a 40-acre farm for £14 a year from Mrs Elizabeth Mutton and ran it as a dairy farm.

- After living Nicely for awhile a problem hit them. Red had killed a calf that wandered onto his property out of hunger and desperation to feed his family during the drought of 1865.

- Sadly Though When McCormack confronted Kelly later that day, Kelly punched him in the nose, causing McCormack to fall. Kelly was arrested for his part in sending the calf's parts and for assaulting McCormack.

- Kelly had to kill the calf for his family survival but it was sad that He was sentenced to three months hard labour on each charge.
- But after the long hard Labour he had to do he was able to return to his family and raise his kids.
- Sadly Red’s health had been deteriorating over the years of struggle and it was in December 1866 that he died at the age of 46 of dropsy(oedema) possibly contributed to by heavy drinking. His death was reported and signed by his son Edward "Ned" Kelly who, while not yet 12 years of age, was to take over as the man of the house. Red was buried in Avenel Cemetery, Victoria, on 29th December 1866.
