- John joined the Continental Army and fought in several battles, including the Battle of Bunker Hill. He was a brave soldier who never gave up, even when the odds were against him. He was inspired by the words of Thomas Paine, who wrote "Common Sense," a pamphlet that argued for American independence. After years of fighting, the colonists finally won their independence in 1783. John was overjoyed and decided to settle in the newly-formed United States of America. He became a farmer and raised a family, always remembering the sacrifices that were made to secure American freedom
