- Inside the Cave, Behind the Wall
- Plato, in his work ''Republic,'' describes a conversation between his teacher Socrates and his older brother Glaucon. The subject of the discussion is in Socrates' words '' The effect of education and the lack of it on our nature ''. To explain his notion, Socrates comes up with an allegory called The Allegory of the Cave.
- Freed Prisoner
- Socrates describes a group of people living in an underground cave which they've been there from their childhood and have their necks and legs chained. So they cannot move and can only see before them. Above and behind them a fire burning, and there is a path between the fire and them. Along this path, a low wall standing like a screen.
- Confrontation
- Along the wall, there are people carrying objects that their shades project to the cave wall. So people living in the cave can only see the shapes of these objects. And, their only knowledge about the world is the shades of these artifacts.
- Telling the Truth
- Somehow one of the prisoners is freed from chains and discovers a way out of the cave.
- When he gets out of the cave, he is dazzled by sunshine. Once his eyes adapted, he began to see the real world. He sees flowers, trees, sky, and amazed. “Previously he had been looking merely at phantoms; now he is nearer to the nature of being.” Then he decides to go back to the cave and tell the other prisoners what he had seen.
- He arrives at the cave, but he hardly sees anything because of the darkness. He tells what he saw outside of the cave, but others don't impressed. They think he is getting crazy, and they mock him. He tries to explain the sunlight, yet they cannot understand and become angry.
