- Billy: Well Willy what do you think about our campsite?
- Let’s go cut some wood and get our campfiregoing before it gets dark.
- Willy: I think it’s great!
- Willy, while we get our campsite set up, let’s do some science and learn about physical changes and chemical changes.
- That sounds interesting…What is a physical change?
- Glad you asked Willy. An example of a physical change is cutting this tree down to make firewood. The physical property of wood is only changed and no new substance is formed. The properties of the wood remain the same.
- So you’re telling me, I can cut this wood into many pieces and it only changes its physical appearance? What can I do to make this piece of wood have a chemical change?
- Now this is where it gets fun… A chemical change starts when the firewood is heated. The wood releases compounds made of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen into the air. When the temperature reaches a certain temperature, the molecules in the wood break down, and the atoms combine with oxygen in the air.
- What else do we have out here that will make a physical and chemical change?
- How is this going to work?

- Is that why it turns black?
- So if I take my graham cracker and my roasted marshmallow and add this piece of chocolate to it, what happens next?
- Who knew I’d be using science and having fun while camping?
- Well let’s begin… When you break the graham cracker down to your desired size, they go through a physical change. And as I begin to roast the marshmallow, the heat causes a chemical reaction producing water molecules, which then evaporate, leaving carbon behind.
- Let’s see…When this chocolate melts it forms another physical change.
