- Four groups of four Columbia University students were collected. Two female observers and two males; one victim and one model. Shown is one of the teams.
- The drunk victim, carrying concealed alcohol, boarded the train reeking of alcohol and stumbling as he walked. The group of observers, models, and the victim entered through different entrances to minimize suspicion.
- As the model waits for the drunk victim to collapse, the observer, a couple of seats away, writes down information from peoples reactions to the tumbling & fidgetiness of the drunk victim
- The confederate pretends to collapse onto the ground. Once on the ground, the model starts the timer and waits for either help to come before the maximum time is reached, or for the maximum time to be reached so he can step in himself. Another black man came to help the victim.
- Close by, the other female observed sits and chats with passengers. She talks to a pregnant women who states she wishes she could help but is not strong enough.
- After nearly an eight-minute ride, the group of the victim, observers, and models gather to board the next train and repeat the trial. This time, the drunk victim decides he no longer wants to play a drunk and is instead given a cane in order to play the ill victim.
