  • The protagonists, George and Lenny, find a pond. They sit and talk about owning their own farm one day. Lenny also finds a dead mouse near the pond, which foreshadows the ending of the story.
  • Curly (Candy's son) walks in and starts talking to Lenny. After Curly leaves, Candy explains to George that Curly was only intimidated by Lenny and didn't mean any harm. George warns him not to mess with Lenny (which is another way the author uses foreshadowing).
  • Curly did not listen to George an he gets into a fight with Lenny later on. Lenny's face is bruised, but he manages to break Curly's fist, unable to control himself. Although no one is upset, Lenny feels bad and runs away.
  • Later on that day, Curly's wife finds Lenny in the barn mourning over a puppy he accidentally killed. Everything harmful that Lenny has done so far was on impulsive due to his mental state. When Curly's wife tries to comfort Lenny, he causes her to freak out, which leads Lenny to panic and snap her neck.
  • In the beginning of the novel, George tells Lenny that if anything went wrong, he should hide near the pond. After accidentally killing Curly's wife, Lenny runs away to the pond to avoid anger from everyone else, and to prevent another accident.
  • George realizes that Curly and the other men at the barn want to kill Lenny for what he did. All the foreshadowing throughout the book ties back to the final chapter when George shoots Lenny as a way of protecting him.
