The talk is dominated by SJ, the class valedictorian, and Manny's friend Jared Christensen. SJ challenges Jared's comments that all Americans now have full rights and equal opportunity and that America has become colorblind. Manny and Justyce mainly keep to themselves.

(Chapter 6)-When Justyce learns that he has been admitted to Yale, he calls SJ, who will be attending Columbia and will just be an hour and a half away from Yale, to let her know the good news. SJ leaps into Justyce's arms in a huge congratulations embrace the next day at school. When Melo sees SJ and Justyce together, he becomes jealous and feigns playful interest in dating Justyce. Justyce agrees, drawn to her attractiveness.
