  • A crowd gathers at the main square, then old man summers walk over with a black box. The people there make small talk before the lottery. The kids are playing, and are reluctant to go over to their parents when called. Mr. Summers then welcomes everyone and they start the Lottery.
  • Climax
  • A member from each family goes up and takes a piece of paper from the box. Mr. Summers keeps track by calling people to come up. In the end, Bill Hutchinson gets the paper with the black dot. Tessie argues against it saying he didn’t have time to get the piece of paper he wanted. Mr. Summers still makes them draw in the box.
  • Falling Action
  •  Each member of Tessie and Bill's family goes up and draws a piece of paper from the box. First Davy, then Nancy, Bill Jr, Tessie, and lastly Bill. 
  • Resolution
  • Tessie ends up getting the black dot after her kids were shown too not to get it. Her husband forced it out of her hands to show everyone.
  • The stones are ready for the last part and people start going to grab them. Some people helped the kids get stones, and some were falling behind but they were still coming at Tessie. Tessie screams that it's not fair begging them to stop. 
  • A stone hits Tessie in the head as she continues screaming.” It’s not fair”. The villagers then begin to throw stones of all sizes at Tessie to kill her, so that their crops will grow well the following year.
