- DNA lives in the nucleus of a cell.
- Oh wow! That makes sense!
- Genes, which are in DNA, contains a set of instructions for a cell to read and use.
- 10 year old Charlie, is asking a scientist (his uncle) why his eyes are a different color than the rest of his family. His uncle is more than happy to explain the wonders of DNA, genes, and more!
- Now I have a question... why are my genes different from an animal for example?
- "DNA is something everybody and all organisms have! DNA is the carrier of genetic information and is responsible for the development and function of an organism. " Uncle Joe explains... "It's important to know that the DNA ladder has specific letters, which are nucleotides, that correspond with different specific letters."
- This makes sense now Uncle Joe! Well, I have to go take care of granny who has covid. Wait, how do virus' work?
- "Genes are a series of nucleotides (A,C,G,T), that make proteins. These proteins interact with chemicals and other proteins to build eye colors, hair colors, freckles, etc. These are then passed down from generations! Chromosomes are made up of proteins and DNA organized into genes. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes" Joe says.
- Now I've got to get my vaccine quick!

- "Well, genetic variation can come from gene variants, which is a process where genetic material rearranges itself inside of a cell, and the cell divides. This alters gene activity and certain protein functions that create different traits in living things" He explains.
- Great question Charlie! Let me explain...
- "To sum it up, the virus is a bundle of proteins with a spiky surface that highjacks healthy cells and infects the body. It can even kill your healthy cells leading you to become very sick!" Uncle Joe says.

- "Bye Charlie, stay safe!" Uncle joe says as he leaves the vaccination site.
