  • Martin Luther was born in Germany in 1483. He became a Professor of Theology. (Study of God) He believed that you would get into heaven by justification alone.
  • Religion played a very important part in peoples lives in the 16th century.
  • The Catholic Church sold indulgences. These were tickets to get into heaven. Martin Luther disagreed.
  • The Catholic Church hadmany abuses such as:Nepotism,Sale of indulgences,Absenteeism,Pluralism andSimony.
  • He wrote the 95 These. These were 95 arguments against the sale of indulgences.
  • Because of the printing press Martin Luther's ideas spread very quickly.

  • Soon, lots of people in Germany knew of Martin Luther. People protested against the Catholic church. He started a knew religion called the Protestant religion.
  • The pope took action against Martin Luther. First he told Luther to change his ideas. Luther disagreed. Then the pope set him a papal bull excommunicating Luther.
  • The Protestant religion spread and the Catholic Church started losing followers. A religious war broke out that lasted nine years. Lutheranism was too strong to be defeated.The Peace of Augsburg brought the end of the war.
  • Martin Luther was ordered to go to the Diet of Worms to debate his ideas. The emperor ordered to capture Luther. On his way home he was 'captured' by one of his followers and took to Wartburg Castle for protection.
  • These events influenced lots of other reformers in Europe. They challenged the Catholic Church and some set up their own religion.
