- When they are talking, Uncle Andrew brings up the subject of magic. Polly and Digory then have to go home and eat dinner, but before they go Uncle Andrew offers Polly a yellow ring out of the box he is holding. But as soon as Polly touches it, she vanishes. Uncle Andrew then informs Digory that he has to go get Polly. Uncle Andrew gives him a ring, and sure enough he vanishes too.

- When Digory gets there, he spots Polly. He also spots many different pools. They figure that since they came into this world through a pool, the other pools might lead to other worlds. They decide to explore the different pools, so they put on their rings and jumped into another pool. Surely enough, they vanish into another world.
- They end up in a new world, but this one is dark and gray, unlike the wood they had just came from. When they look around, they realize there is a woman who looks very important sitting on a throne. They thought she was alive, but as they got closer, they could tell that she was not. At this point all Polly wanted was to go home, but Digory wanted to stay. They then noticed that there was a bell hanging on the wall. Digory tried to leave it alone, but his curiosity got the best of him, and he rang it.
