  • Cash uses an old run down courthouse to represent the American government, and a lean flag pole to represent the wavering number of American patriots. He uses a worn flag to represent American history and pride. An old man is siting on a park bench, he represents patriots in the US, and proceeds to tell the speaker about the Ragged Old Flag
  • Johnny ties several cuts and tears on the flag to historical events, such as the Fall of the Alamo, the War of 1812, the Crossing of the Delaware, the American Civil War, and the Battle of Shiloh Hill. He uses these to express American victories and failures that have built the county's identity and character
  • Cash says that the flag goes to where it is sent by the government, but the flag is used as an analogy for the American spirit of patriotism that is highly regarded in warriors of the US military
  • The author says, "they've about quit waving her back home" which is also an analogy of anti-patriots, who express anger in a multitude of ways from burn flag to spiting on drafted soldiers.
  • He says that the government that the flag stands for is "scandalized throughout the land" which means exactly what it says. Although lacking in poetic analogy, this part of the poem is still very important to its development, because it definitely separates the flag from being a symbol of the state, to now being looked at as a national symbol.
  • Johnny refers to the flag as being "threadbare" which is an analogy for the shrinking patriot base and political stability in the US. From this point, Cash begins to reassure viewers that the spirit of patriotism isn't going anywhere.
