- In the great depression, in the summer, The kids along with Lizabeth had no radios, newspapers, or anything that could entertain. The only thing that they could do to make the summer days pass, They make up whatever they can think of.
- Climax
- With the kids having nothing to do, they decide to go to Miss Lottie's yard to try and mess with her and her mentally ill son. In her garden was yellow marigolds that all of the kids hated because it conflicted with the grey chaos of the town. The kids use stones to cut the heads of some of the marigolds and soon get driven away by Miss Lottie.
- Falling action
- At Lizabeth house she hears from her parents about their financial situation. The conversation enrages and upsets Maribelle.
- Resolution
- With Lizabeth enraged, she left her house and went to Miss Lottie's yard. She ripped and ravaged through the Marigolds while Joey tried to get her to stop.
- With all of the Marigolds gone, Miss Lottie Holds no anger, No sadness, and no emotion. with Lizabeth realizing what she has done, she starts to feel regret
- With Lizabeth being older and with more age, she realizes looking back that Miss Lottie was just trying to have a sense of hope. And now Lizabeth has Marigolds of his own.
