  • Iago is jealous because Othello selected Cassio as his lieutenant when Iago was more qualified.

  • Iago states his plan for revenge against Othello in his soliloquy at the end of Act 1. The soliloquy foreshadows Iago tricking Othello into thinking that he [Iago] is trustworthy and using Cassio as a pawn to eventually bring the demise of Othello.

  • To Cassio: "What did you mean by that same handkerchief you gave me even now? ...A likely piece of work, that you should find it in your chamber, and not know who left it there!"

  • Cassio comforts Desdemona and Iago takes notice. Iago decides to use Desdemona and Cassio as pawns in his plan for revenge against Othello.

  • Iago tries to make Cassio look bad by getting him drunk. Cassio stabs Montano. Cassio's reputation is ruined.

  • Iago had previously advised Cassio to talk to Desdemona about Othello giving him his post back. This is all a part of Iago's plan. Cassio trusts Iago even though Iago is tricking him. Iago is not honest at all.
  • A bedchamber in the castle: Irony

  • "I have use for it. Go, leave me"
  • Desdemona drops her handkerchief. Emilia picks up the handkerchief and gives it to Iago. Iago plans to have the handkerchief planted in Cassio's room to make him look guilty.

  • Bianca found Desdemona's handkerchief in Cassio's room.
  • "By heaven, that should be my handkerchief!"
  • Othello is angry because he believes Desdemona has been unfaithful to him because of the handkerchief evidence. Iago's plan for revenge is working.
  • "Ay, let her rot, and perish, and be damned to-night; for she shall not live"
  • "Nay, that 's not your way"
  • Desdemona goes to the "honest" Iago for help. Little does she know that Iago is the source of all of her problems.
  • "O good Iago, What shall I do to win my lord again? Good friend, go to him"

  • Othello killed Desdemona. Iago killed Emilia. Othello stabs himself. The cruel Iago lives.
