  • Mexico disputed Texas' independence. The Mexican army built its military presence along the contested area, and General Zachary Taylor encamped the US army on the other side. The border was not yet fully determined, and negotiations weren't going well. Violence seemed likely by May 1846.

  • As Polk was preparing to ask for a declaration of war, a telegram arrived from the border territory. General Taylor reported that men on both sides of the border had been killed. 11 Americans have been killed. But we didn’t know what happened yet.

  • Polk rewrote his war message. We must defend our national honor! Americans have been killed on American soil, this is an OUTRAGE! He made it sound like the war on Mexico would be defensive (which makes it easier to gain support). Congress swept up in the spirit, and voted for war overwhelmingly: 174 to 14 in the House, and 40 to 2 in the Senate.

  • The two nations signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 to end the. It granted the US about 1/3 of all Mexican territory. It formally recognized Texas as part of the US, and the Rio Grande as the border between the two nations. The US gave Mexico $15 million in compensation for the loss in exchange. This land acquisition is called theMexican Cession.
