  • Cause of War
  • Trouble with Native Americans
  • Land Battles
  • The war of 1812 started because Great Britain was violating U.S. rights. They were impressing soldiers ans seizing ships and its cargo. The British attacked a boat called the Chesapeake, which left many sailors dead and 4 taken away. The last straw was when the Indians fought America because of land expansion. America found that the indians were carrying British arms, so they assumed that Great Britain was supplying them with weapons. War Hawks wanted revenge for the Chesapeake and they also wanted to drive the British out of Canada. When James Madison came into office, he declared war.
  • Sea Battles
  • Native Americans disliked U.S expansion, so they fought back. The Shawnee tribe united with different tribes to fight the Americans. William Henry Harrison and his soldiers fought and defeated the Indians. They were outraged to find them armed with British weapons.
  • The Battle of New Orleans
  • In 1812, 1813, and 1814, the U.S army marched into Canada, but British forces drove them back every time. Later in 1814, the British Army burned down the capitol and the White House in Washington D.C. The British then attacked Baltimore, attempting to capture fort McHenry, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
  • Results of War
  • The U.S Naval force captured six British ships on lake Erie. This enabled William Harrison to enter upper Canada and defeated the British in September. This victory didn't last long, because the British drove the Americans out in December.
  • On January 8th, 1815, British troops Marched into New Orleans. Americans fought back with a rain of bullets, killing about 2,000 British soldiers. Americans only lost 70 people during the battle, making the the greatest U.S. victory during the war.
  • Two weeks before the battle of New Orleans, American and British diplomats met in Belgium and signed a peace treaty. Neither side won the war, but both sides claimed victory. Even though Ghent's treaty did not solve the issues that caused the war, impressment and ship stealing slowly faded away. There were two major effects of the war. The first being it weakened native American resistance, and the second was that U.S. regained its pride.
