  • In the time of the rule of Czar Alexander III, there was a man named Daniil, a powerful nobleman who held much wealth and his influence spanned the from St. Petersburg to Vladistokov. While he was well known for his abundant wealth he was significantly infamous for his Michiavellian tactics in business and the Czarist Bureaucracy. On one such account one of Daniil’s subordinate’s children grew horribly sick to the near point of death and pleaded with Daniil to grant him a higher position as he knew he was qualified and greatly needed the money to pay for his child’s medicine. After multiple pleas from the subordinate, Daniil ultimately had him fired as to Daniil he was bothering him.
  • Daniil was showing off his newly bought estate to his fellow nobles; they followed him after a meeting at a bureaucratic meeting. They had all arrived in their carriages as Daniil was getting out of his own, to greet them. However he missed the footstep and fell landing very poorly on his right side. The other nobles rushed to his aid but he swore he was fine and insisted on them continuing the tour. The pain was small and meek at first but as the weeks went on, a sering and deep cutting pain afflicted him.
  • He began to become aggressive and lash out towards everyone. And eventually so unbearable was the pain, he couldn’t even complete his duties and so he was removed from his position. This threw him down a spiral of misery and cynicism. His cousin, Leonid, a seminarian only a year prior ordained a Deacon, could see his anguish, and so took action. Granted the whole family did, everyone did, but they were all too scared to take on the raging beast that was Daniil. Leonid, wishing to ease some of his suffering, took on the responsibility of caring for Daniil when he became bedridden.
  • Over time they grew close and this led to Daniil asking questions to the seminarian whether about philosophy, science, or religion and likewise Leo in interest on how the judicial system worked and political matters. It was a subject which Daniil never had taken much interest in since he was a very pragmatic man but for some reason he felt pulled to it. The family could see a shift in Daniil’s practices, he slowly became more caring to them, even to the fiance of his daughter whom he previously always scolded and spoke poorly of. He even began ordering that money be given to those he had previously wronged in some sort of effort to show he had changed was sorrowful. One day Daniil, knowing both Leo’s ordination was soon and also that he had little time left, asked him if he could receive the Holy Mysteries and Holy Unction from him. Leo promised him as such and by the next week Leonid was ordained to the Presbyterate (Priesthood) and returned to fulfill his promise after he also got permission from the Bishop to do so.
  • The now Father Leonid went through with Daniil the process of the mysteries of Repentance, Holy Unction, and then Eucharist. Daniil was by this point very near to death and so it took all of his strength to do these things. Father Leonid knowing his time was at hand began to read to him Saint John Chrysostom’s Paschal homily for it was in the Season of Pascha. Daniil felt at tremendous peace and even began to tear up. And it was at the words of, “O’ Death, where is your sting? O’Hades, where is your victory?” Daniil felt a strong mystical aura encompass him. This only grew as Father continued with “Christ is risen, and you, O’death, are annihilated!” He envisioned the darkness of death being blotted out by the sheer brightness of the Divine Light of the Risen Christ. “Christ is risen, and the evil ones are cast down!” He envisioned demons scattering from Christ as He walked toward the Just and Righteous. “Christ is risen, and the angels rejoice!” He envisioned the Holy Seraphim crying “Holy!!! Holy!!! Holy!!!”
  • “Christ is risen, and life is liberated!” He envisioned the Just and Righteous being led out of the Bosom of Abraham. “Christ is risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead;” He envisioned all the Just and Righteous having left, resting in Heaven. “For Christ, having risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. To Him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen!” A Light brighter than the sun appeared to him. Daniil heard a whisper but it mixed with the wind. With what little strength he had left he asked simply “Is that You, Lord?”It was then Daniil departed from this life and entered into Life eternal and so was saved. Leonid later made note that “Daniil’s life was one of the Prodigal Son who returned home to his Father after a lifetime of Malice and Vainglory.” And so was the story of the Noble Daniil Moshnin.
