- After Viola survives an unfortunate shipwreck, the captain suggests that she works for Duke Orsino disguised as a man, Cesario. After Cesario meets the Duke, he gives his new page a task to confess his love to Olivia.
- Despite Cesario's conversation with Olivia, Olivia continues to reject Orsino. A love triangle arises between Cesario, Olivia, Viola and Orsino. Olivia sends Malvolio, her steward, to Cesario with a ring.
