  • The first thing that resonated with me was how Gina's mother never gave up hope, despite what the doctors had said. Her strength of character and willingness to bless and protect her baby through baby was inspiring. She exemplified how one can face adversity with faith
  • Another thing that resonated with me was Gina's progress with hippo-therapy. She was able to improve upon her posture, verbalize sounds and understanding the pattern of walking (right, left etc.) through horseback riding. It is truly incredible to see how beneficial animals can be for those with special needs. Seeing Gina react positively to this was heartwarming, and touching.
  • Despite all. the good that was done there are some things I disagree with.
  • For starters, I am unsure how I feel about "electric simulation for swallowing therapy." Something about that rubs me the wrong way, and it sounds like it could do more harm than good
  • The other thing I disagree with it stem cell research. It is quite a problematic field of science, and though I do not know much about it, but something controversial should not be used to test on child like Gina in my opinion.
  • One way I would encourage parent engagement is through curriculum integration. Having parents engage in activities that relate to what they are learning in school, will create a more collaborative environment - while also increasing knowledge retention in students. Students can find real life situations that apply to a lesson, all while learning from both their teacher and guardians (Thorson, 2018).
  • Another way I may promote parent involvement is by considering their perspective. Having weekly emails or Google Forms sent out where parents can express their concerns and thoughts over what has been taught over the week, discuss issues that their children may be struggling with, and what they want to improve on within the classroom. This way the parents are involved within the education of their children (Thorson, 2018).
  • A third way to help parents find their voice is to ensure equity and promote diversity! Having a culture day at school will allow for students and parents to get involved. They can come to the school, give a brief presentation on their culture, dress up and share food from their heritage. This helps to create a community, all while parents get to express themselves within the school (Creamer, 2021)
  • The final way to help parents find their voice is through fundraisers, sports and other extracurricular activities. They can use these school events to raise awareness for social, emotional, and developmental needs for the students within the school. Their voice and their message can be spread around the school to encourage awareness and equity for all students.
