- The city of Omelas is a prosperous city full of joy and happiness. Its inhabitants commence the Festival of Summer with a horse race, shouting, singing, and dancing freely. There is no king or clergy in Omelas, and happiness and freedom is valued above all else, no matter where it comes from.
- This is the way things must be. Even if we help the child it won't do much good.
- But hidden in a basement, there is a starving child being locked away and abused. All of the citizens of Omelas are conscious of this child, some even pay visits and gawk at the ghastly sight of its pale, emaciated body. But no one ever sets the child free, for the happiness and prosperity of the entire population would be destroyed if this happened.
- I will be good. Please let me out. I will be good!
- Someone has to help him, this is horrible
- When forced to react to the moral dilemma presented by this situation, most people choose to accept things for the way they are, valuing the happiness of the general public over the child. However, the few who chose to reject Omelas for its treatment of the child were compelled to leave the city behind forever.
