- The Vignes twins come from a small light-skinned obsessed town called Mallard in New Orleans. When the 16-year-old twins found out that their mother was taking them out of school, so that they can get a job to help out around the house they became fairly upset and decided to take off to New Orleans to start a new life.

- This is stella, she begins to pass as white to be able to get a job, but then allows this to become her new identity and puts her past behind her. In doing so she finds her husband in the process and creates a beautiful life and child with while never telling him about her true identity.
- This is Desiree, Stella's twin. After stella started passing as a white person she left Desiree behind. Desiree waited 6 months for Stella to return and when she didn't, she decided to leave New Orleans and move to D.C. where she met her husband, Sam Winston. Their marriage was loving at first, but then slowly went downhill when Sam began to mentally and physically abuse Desiree.
