- Evan ran toward the bridge,stumbling int he deepening darkness.Ont he other side,he could wee someone running toward him,but the light was so dim,he couldn't tell who it was.The person was running as if a wild animal were chasing it..When he saw Maxwell,he thought he was with Jessie.Maxwell,what happened!?But Maxwell ran past him like Evan was invisible.
- When Evan came over he asked,what is going on?They were torturing a frog by pulling his legs off while it was still alive!This is our property,and we can do whatever we want! Jeff said.Yeah!said Mike.But that's unfair for the frog!Jessie cried.Then Jessie,Mike,and Jeff started arguing about trespassing and spying.Shut up!!Evan yelled and everyone did.Jessie,did you break the window?Evan asked.No,Maxwell did,she replied.
- Jeff!Mike!Come here right now!!
- Evan turned and raced over the bridge and up the hill where Maxwell had come from.He saw the lights on so he headed toward the porch.Then he heard voices.He went to the barn.There he saw Jessie holding rocks and two boys in front of her.She seemed angry at them.
- Evan stepped forward to show he wasn't afraid.But two of them at once.Evan didn't have much experience with fighting.He wished he had one of his friends.Two against two would be fair.Wham.Another rock sailed over and hit Jeff's shoulder.Jeez,what are you doing?You can't throw rocks,Jeff said.Who says?Jessie said.She might be the smallest fourth grader ever,but when it came to justice,she was fearless.Hold her down,Jeff said.Evan let loose.He shoved Mike so hard that he fell to the ground.Hey calm down,It's no big deal.Get out of here.Let's go,Evan said.No,Jessie said.
- Not until we get that frog out of there,Jessie said.Your not going in our barn,said Jeff.Jessie didn't care.I'm going to break every window until your mom comes out.A voice called out.Jeff!Mike!Good,said Jessie now you have to go inside.Jeff hesitated.Mike stopped frozen too.Right now!she called.Mike ran off.You better be gone.Jeff said.He too walked to the house.Jessie and Evan went into the barn to get the frog out.

- They untied the string tied to each leg.It was unable to move.It's going to die,said Jessie.Evan thought she was right.Maybe it forgot to to or it's legs got damaged somehow.Evan said,we need to take it home.When he was about to pick it up,it leaped through the air and dissappeared.Hey!Jessie said.He's okay!.Did you see him jump?Wow!Jessie smiled at Evan,and he wanted to smile to,but he couldn't.C'mom,he said.We gotta go.And we don't have a lot of time left
