Storyboard-Text

  • Hello! I'm Stephen Mather, a millionaire that cares about nature. Now, in 1915, the numbers of our national parks are steadily growing, but we don't have an organization taking care of them. That's why I believe we need a specialized group to take care of these parks.
  • It all started when I visited several national parks in Sierra Nevada - I was disappointed with how badly the parks were taken care of, and decided to do something about it through the power of my pen.
  • Dear Secretary, This summer I visited some of the parks in the Sierra Nevada. I was upset with the lack of care being put into preserving these parks, and I respectfully request that you work to improve these conditions. Sincerely, Stephen Mather
  • So you see, I now realized I was capable of making a difference in these parks. I decided to take my efforts to another level by bringing my opinion of the necessity of an overseeing organization to the public.
  • Mather spoke to students, newspaper publishers, and companies to gain support for his ambition of creating an organization to oversee and preserve the national parks.
  • After much hard work...
  • Finally! It is now 1916, and Congress has passed the "Organic Act" allowing the National Park Service to be created. I'm the first director of this important organization, and now I can really make a difference in preserving these spectacular natural places.
  • Park rangers are credited with keeping up the structure of the parks, organizing activities for anyone visiting them, and offering information to any visitors seeking to ask questions or learn more about a specific park. In addition, the National Park System maintains the parks and protects them in ways that reduce pollution and environmental degradation but still allow visitors to experience America's natural wonders.
  • Today, thanks to Stephen Mather's dedication, America is home to 392 well-cared-for national sites, including battlefields, parks, seashores, and many more, all preserved for our current and future generation's enjoyment and to symbolize America's history and how far we've come.
  • I believe the national parks need an organization specifically created to manage them. Currently, without such an organization, companies are using the parks to their benefit and aren't concerned with their protection.
