- In 1803 the French sold United States for 15 million. Doubled the size of the United States and opened up possibilities for western expansion.
- Long
- Lewis and Clark spent 123 miles in Kansas and was telling everybody how beautiful Kansas land was.
- Jacksons Speech
- Pike was the first American to travel the territory by land. He describes Kansas land as worthless.
- Indian removal act
- Long travel by steamboat and named this land as "The great American desert".This view of Kansas was a desert stuck, and it influenced the US government’s settlement policies for many years.

- Jackson's speech was about him informing congress on the progress of the removal of Indian tribes living east of the Mississippi River to unsettled land in the west.
- Because of explorer’s description of Kansas, the U.S. government didn’t think white Americans could survive. Many tribes found living conditions to be unfamiliar and difficult and this also caused a lot of tension in between the tribes.
