- Why is the asphalt hot, while the white stripes are cooler?
- Wait - I think I read about something like that. Let's wait for night to see if I'm right. In the meantime, I'll do more research.
- How much heat something can absorb is called its 'albedo'. Things with a higher albedo reflect light better. Light that isn't reflected either passes through the object, called transmission, like with glass, or absorbs into it, like with asphalt. Can you see the effect rightnow? Dark objects, like asphalt, have higher albedos. That's why you don't wear dark shirts on hot days.
- Okay! The reason the asphalt is cooler at night has to do with the absorbed heat from the sun.
- Well, for one thing, asphalt isn't natural. It's been engineered to have certain characteristics, which include absorbing and storing heat well. Just by its very nature, with its color and density, asphalt gets hot. Concrete gets hot too, because it's dense, but it's a lighter color, so it doesn't get as hot.
