- On Christmas Day, 1776, Washington crossed the frozen Delaware River and ambushed the Hessian troops in Trenton, New Jersey. While not important strategically, this battle was important for troops morale.

- After crossing the Delaware, Washington led his troops around the British, outflanking them near Princeton. The British were forced to surrender, giving Washington a major victory.
