Around the time of 265 BCE, Ashoka became the third ruler of the Mauryan Empire, He planned on expanding his empire by force.

Shortly after becoming emperor, he decided to establish strict laws imposing the death penalty, even for very minor and small crimes.

Ashoka Converts to Buddhism
Ashoka comes to the scene of the battle and starts to weep as he sees the death and destruction that he caused, while watching the defeated Kalingans being led into slavery by his army.
Ashoka saw a monk that was completely calm among the chaos, and wondered how he was still so calm, and how he could seem so happy, even when it seemed impossible to.
After seeing this, he converted to Buddhism. He renounced war and began a reign of peace and nonviolence. He had several temples built throughout India. He sent missionaries as far as Sri Lanka, Syria, China, and Greece to spread the message of Buddha.
