Storyboard-Text

  • Emily wakes up at 4:00AM to have time to herself. After a sleepless night, full of stress which was worsened by tossing and turning. And when she did fall asleep she had stress dreams leaving her tired and emotionally drained when she woke up.
  • Emily works out, does some work on her computer, prepares her family meals for breakfast and lunch
  • Wake up Kids!
  • Why is the house such a mess? Can you take me to Ashley’s after school? I don’t like this food! Where’s my tie? Don’t forget to pick me up from soccer practice! My parents are coming for a quick visit this weekend!
  • Good morning family!
  • Family leaves the kitchen a mess as they scramble to get ready before they leave. Leaving Emily to clean up after them.
  • What a mess...
  • Emily sighs and cleans the kitchen as her children and husband yell down questions to her
  • Where are my cleats? Where is my computer? Where us my flute? Where is my dance bag? Where are my files that were in my green folder?
  • *sigh*
  • Cleats are in your bedroom in your closet. Your dance bag is in the kitchen, where you left it last night. Your flute and sheet music are in the family room by the sheet music stand. The green folder and its files are on your desk in the home office. I put your computer in your computer bag already. Its by the door.
  • Emily’s family leaves in a hurry to catch the bus and to get to work on time, leaving an eerie silence that Emily can’t decide if she loves or hates.
  • They didn't even hug me goodbye or say goodbye or even a thank you.
  • Wow. I can’t believe they barely even talked to me this morning. And no one even picked up after themselves. Not even Jeff and he is supposed to be an adult.
  • Emily feels angry as she picks up her things to get out of the house to leave
  • I do everything and if Jeff did one single task he is praised as the ‘world's best dad’. But no one says anything to me or even say thank you.
  • Still angry, Emily gets in her car to go to work
  • I want ‘it all’. But it's so hard with my work and family pulling me in two different directions. My mom always used to tell me that having a career and kids was hard but… I never believed her.
  • 25 Years Ago... Emily and her mother sit and talk
  • Honey, back in my day… many women weren’t able to work outside of their houses.
  • Because many people didn’t want women to work for them, ‘Help Wanted Ads’ were separated by women and men.
  • Why mom?
  • Women's jobs were typically seen as domestic workers and secretaries whereas men could be doctors, lawyers, and businessmen.
  • What if a woman was a doctor or lawyer?
  • Why were the jobs separated by women and men?
  • Well, women could be demoted or fired for getting pregnant. And sexual harassment ran rampent in the in the work place.
  • Well then she had to look under the ‘Help Wanted’ male section.
  • How were you treated? What happened to you?
  • What about the other women, who were not doctors or lawyers? Were they treated fairly?
  • I was a kindergarten teacher, but once I got married and was pregnant I was asked to resign.
  • I know it wasn’t fair, but that's how it was back then. I was expected to leave work and to become a doting wife to my husband and nurturing mother to my children.
  • But that's not fair. Did you ever go back?
  • Is that what you wanted to do though?
  • Well, I am happy with my decisions and life. But of course, I wanted to do more in my professional career when I was younger.
  • No, I can’t and I don't want to. I am busy with you, your siblings, your father, and taking care of the house. That part of my life is over.
  • Well its not too late now for you. You could go back…
  • Maybe today is the day I hear about the promotion...
  • Back to the present day...At work Emily is one of the top contenders for a big promotion
  • I am going to get the position. I am one of the most senior employees in my position and I am highly qualified
  • I have worked so hard for this position. This job would take me to the next level and the raise that comes with it wouldn’t be so bad either. Maybe I could hire a cleaner to help me around the house every once in a while…
  • Hey Emily! Good morning! How are you
  • I am super tired, but hey! I am happy to be here.
  • Good morning rachel! I am good! I have been here for fifteen minutes and I’m already tired. How are you?
  • No, nothing yet. But I believe in you! You have this in the bag! I don’t think you have any serious competition. You are one of the best in your department.
  • Thanks Rachel! I appreciate your kind words. I really want this hopefully and you are right! I have been busting my butt these past years and especially these past few months running around like a crazy woman.
  • Yes, I know exactly what you mean. Have you heard anything about the position?
  • I know. You’re a crazy woman running around with this job and your kids and family. How do you do it?
  • Wow. you are superwoman. When I grow up I want to be like you.
  • Honestly I don’t know. With the kids pulling me in every direction and Jeff being of no help whatsoever, I have to do everything because If I don't, I don't know who will.
  • Honestly, when I grow up I want to be like me too.
  • Wow the timing of that is crazy. Hopefully this is about some good news about the job
  • Emily please come into my office at 1:15 today please
  • DING
  • Gosh I want that job. Hopefully I hear something about it soon.
  • Yes! Emily! Please come in.
  • Hello? I am here for my 1:15 meeting today? I got an email?
  • At 1:15PM...
  • Thank you sir.
  • And you are such an asset in your current position and you have been doing such amazing work but… We have decided to go with someone else for the position.
  • Hello! So I first want to start this meeting with thanking you for all of your hard work these past few months
  • Oh ok. Thank you for considering me and I hope you consider me for any future positions.
  • Yes. Thank you Emily.
  • Who could have gotten the job? I was perfect for it! This isn’t fair.
  • Yes, they gave it to John Smith.
  • I know I heard, I am so sorry.
  • I know it's ridiculous.
  • Wait what? How did you know? Do you know who got it instead?
  • Wait! What? Are you serious? He got hired five months ago and lacks overall experience. He is 25 years old.
  • Hey Rachel. I didn’t get the job…
  • You know what? It's even more than ridiculous. They are promoting him because he is a white male who is young versus me who is a woman who has children.
  • I know it's messed up. You deserved and earned that promotion with all your hard work.
  • I know that promotion should have been mine.
  • Later on...
  • Hi John! Congrats on the new promotion!
  • Oh good!
  • Yeah honestly if I didn't get a promotion any time soon, I would have just jumped ship and gotten a better job somewhere else. But this company is ok, so this is good for now I guess.
  • Oh yeah! Thanks! Yeah it was completely unexpected but good.
  • Hey Emily!
  • Wow, yeah, well good for you. I am really happy for you!
  • How did I lose the promotion to him?
  • Yeah well thanks! See you!
  • Rachel, oh my gosh. I just talked to John and he said he was going to leave if he didn’t get a promotion. Isn’t that ridiculous? And he said that he didn’t even expect the promotion. He is 25 years old?!
  • That's so crazy. I can’t believe we work for and among people that would reward that type of thinking and those kinds of actions.
  • Part of me thinks that maybe I should quit? Maybe John is onto something? Maybe I will find a job somewhere else? But I don’t have the flexibility of a white 25 year old male.
  • Wow ok. You have some things to think about.
  • Would you actually leave?
  • No,no, I don’t know… I think I will have to think about it. I’ll have to talk to Jeff about it. If I can’t grow and expand my career here and they don’t appreciate me then maybe I’ll take my talents elsewhere.
  • Hi family! I am home! How is everyone?
  • Hellooo…. Family? Jeff? Kids? Where is everyone?
  • What no hello? No, hey mom how was your day?
  • Emily walks into the living room to find her family on the couch on their phones and computers while the tv plays. They sit in silence. The room and house are a mess.
  • You know what? The house is a mess. I’ve had a long and hard day. You guys can at least say “Hi! How was your day?”When I walked in and tried to talk to you guys. I’m going to my room and when I come out the house should be clean.
  • Hi.
  • You are unbelievable. That's what you took from what I said tonight?
  • Emily is in bed watching her comfort tv show, New Girl when her husband walks in
  • Oh, hi Jeff
  • Listen, I think you were unfair with the kids. They were just relaxing and now you have them cleaning the entire house when you were supposed to do it tonight is just unfair.
  • Hi Emily
  • No. How could you not even ask me about my day? Also it is not just my job to clean the house. It's ours. I work just like you.
  • If you don’t know what to do then ask. And you should ask me if I need help!
  • Well… I mean you always know what to do better than me.
  • Well, yes. I-
  • Thank you Jeff. I love you.
  • I am busy and I need your support just as much as you need mine. I need your help to keep the house clean, help with the kids, and you know maybe ask me about my day?
  • Ok. yes I hear you and I am sorry. I will work on it and will be better. And I won’t be afraid to ask you if you need help.
  • I love you too.
  • So, Em. How was your day?
  • Well… I had a day. Lets just relax and watch New Girl and I’ll tell you about it later.
  • The End
