- Louie Zamperini went to high school in Torrance, California. There he competed in track and field and learned that he has a talent for running.
- Maybe I could get a job as a welder.
- He ended up setting the national high school record in the mile with a time of 4 minutes and 21 seconds.

- Louie wanted to race in the Olympics at Berlin the upcoming year. He decided to changes things up by competing in the 5000 meter run.
- At the Berlin Olympics Louie finished 8th overall. He was not thrilled about the position he finished in but he was with happy with his time of 14:46.
- Hey mom and dad, I'm not going to make it home. The crew and I are being deployed...
- Louie went back home and started to train for the NCAA 1500 meter race. His goal for the race was to go under 4:00 minutes. He did not go under 4:00 minutes, but he did get the NCAA record that lasted 15 years.

- The beginning of World War II was beginning. The Olympics for the upcoming year were cancelled, so Louie decided to stop training.

- Louie decided to registered early for the draft so he could get a job that he would prefer.

- Louie's training as a bombardier is going well. He had to go do more training away from home, so he said good by to his family. Not knowing that this would be the last time seeing them for awhile.
- Louie arrives at Ephrata, Washington. There he gets to work on finishing his training. His training ends up getting cut short; he and his crew are told that they are going to be deployed.

- Louie and his crews flight goes down into the ocean during a mission. Only Louie, Mac, and Phil live. Mac passed away on the 33rd day of being stranded. On the 47th day Louie and Phil were taken by the Japanese navy and taken prisoner.

- Louie and Phil are separated. Louis is extremely weak and sick. The guards taunted and abuse Louie daily.

- Louie is brought into an interrogation room to be questioned about the war.
- Louie is sent to a prisoner of war camp at Ofuna. He assumes that the camp will be better than what he was at before. Upon arrival he learns that he was wrong. Everyday spent at Ofuna involves intense labor, solitary confinement, and beatings.
- I can't do this for much longer
- Louie is sent to a new camp called Omori. He is taking riskes by stealing food and hiding information from the prison guards. A new leader for Omori arrives. His name is Mutsuhiro Watanabe and he has a thing for destroying Louie.
- Louie is told to do a report about the war for the Japanese radio station. This message reaches Louie's parents and they can't believe he is alive.

- Back at Omori, Watanabe also known as "The Bird" is treating the prisoners cruelly. He had the prisoners punch Louie as hard as they can. A friend of Louie says that he was hit around 220 times.
- The war was coming to an end. The prisoners were informed of the bombing at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A few weeks after the official end of the war, the soldiers were set free.
- Louie arrives home to his family. He and his family celebrate his return. Louie is still having a hard time recovering from the abuse he and the prisoner experienced.
- One day at a beach Louie meets a woman named Cynthia Applewhite. With Cynthia in his life, Louie forgot about the days as a POW. On May 25th Louie married Cynthia.
- The following years Louie is still doing well. Sometimes he would have nightmares of the events that happened in Japan. Luckily, with the help of Cynthia and his other family members we has able conquer his nightmares.
