  • The French Revolution
  • Introduction
  • The French revolution was due to the inequalities ofthe social conditions in France in the late 1700s. France was out of money and was led by a King who lived a life of luxury during a time when the general population were hungry and living in poverty.
  • We have many privliges and collect tithes
  • Meetings of the Estates General
  • We own 20% of the land & are exempt from paying many taxes
  • We pay most of the taxes and are looked down upon
  • The Tennis Court Oath
  • As the third estate, we were upset with our position in French society.
  • The Storming of the Bastille
  • Food and bread were scarece
  • This was the spark of the French Revolution and revolt
  • We hope to free political prisoners
  • Freedom of speech!

  • The goal of the meeting was to deal with the financial crisis in France. Typically, voting would occur with each estate having 1 vote. The 3rd estate feared clergy and nobilbity would overrule, and they would have no power.

  • My coup worked--I am the emporer now!
  • The third estate resented the estate system and the monarchy, and as a result, formed the National Assembly. The Tennis Court Oath was important because it showed the unhappiness with Louis XVI.

  • The 3rd estate focused their anger towards the government on the Bastille. To many people in Paris, the Bastille was a symbol of tyranny.
  • The Congress of Vienna
  • We need strong countries around us, restore balance of powers and put royalty back on the throne
  • The Declaration of the Rights of Man & Citizen stated that all people had natural rights, including liberty, property, security and resistance to oppression. It also included freedom of speech, religion and equal justice.
  • This was a period of the French Revolution characterized by violence, where radicals took control of the revolutionary government. They executed anyone suspected of not being loyal.

  • Napoleon rose through the ranks during the French Revolution and seized politcal power in a coup, making himself the all-powerful emporer.
  • The French tried to invade Russia in 1812 and it was not successful. Two years later, Napoleon left the throne and was exiled to the island of Elba.
  • The objective of the Congress of Vienna was to come up with a long-term peace plan after the issues created by the wars. They wanted to resize the main powers so they could balance each other and remain at peace.
