In order to begin the process, one must have legally immigrated to the US and been in the country for 5 years. One must also be able to speak and understand English.
Step Three: Interview
I love my job at the factory.
That's great!
The first step is actually filling out and sending the application in for processing. This part of the process can take up to a year.
Step Four: Citizenship Test
An applicant's fingerprints will be processed by the FBI in order to do a background check and to be sure that the person has not committed any crimes.
Step Five: Taking the Oath
Raise your right hand.
The applicant will then be interviewed by an immigration officer. The person will be asked questions about their job, family, home, and background.
Next, the applicant must be able to pass an English reading and writing test. They will also be tested on their knowledge of U.S. history. The applicant is able to see the questions ahead of time to study!
Finally, the applicant must take the Oath of Allegiance. This is usually done in a courtroom with many others. Once the oath is taken, a certificate is given and the process is complete.
