  • It is important as future teachers for us to recognize that there is a difference between English Learning speech issues and Special Education speech issues. Often times, English learners are categorized as SPED when they actually just have a lack of familiarity with articulating the English language.
  • It is important to know that if ELLs have a speech issue, there will be evidence of this issue in both of their spoken languages. They may also experience problems with articulation, problems with speech fluency, stuttering, inappropriate voice modulation and tone, and/or problems with syntax, semantics, pragmatics, comprehension and expression. If any of these issues were only evident when they spoke English, it would tell us that the student has a lack of familiarity of the English language, and not a speech issue that would categorize them as a SPED student.
  • An article titled, “Using Talk to Scaffold Referential Questions for English Language Learners” (Mc Niel, 2012) listed some modifications for ELs to help them understand and respond to referential questions. Some of these modifications are: getting the student interested in the task and providing a good opening, dividing the task into multiple, smaller tasks, motivating students to pursue the task, drawing students’ attention to relevant areas of the problem or task, creating a positive atmosphere to lower the stress level of the student during the task and modeling the desired outcome of the question.
  • An article titled, “Accommodations for Special Needs Students: What We "Can" Do” (Hagedorn, 2002) emphasizes the idea that successful teaching of special needs children depends on the teacher’s ability and willingness to adapt to the child and provide materials and instruments for them. Some accommodations that the article mentioned included cognitive devices such as computers and switch operated devices, augmentative communication devices for those without speech, mobility devices and environmental control devices.
  • A website that was made to assist English Learners with their academics is Starfall.com. Starfall is a website supported by charity that uses a systematic approach along with audiovisual interactivity to help children read with phonics. Starfall provides entertaining educational activities for students in pre-kindergarten through second grade who are in special education, homeschooled and/or learning English (ELD, ELL, ESL).
  • Website for SPED Students A website that was made to provide support and resources for Parents and Teachers of children in Special Education is SpecialEducationGuide.com. This website provides help for individuals who want to learn about and master the terminology, procedures and best practices in Special Education.
