- Scientist Reginald Fessenden broadcast the first program of music and voice ever transmitted over long distances. Joseph Henry discovered the electromagnetic phenomenon of self-inductance. He also discovered mutual inductance. Guglielmo Marconi developed the technology in subsequent years to achieve greater range. The foundation for both wireless telegraphy and radio had been laid.
