  • Dedication
  • This vignette is dedicated to Autumn. Here's a short section of Mommy's story.
  • Artist Statement
  • I try not to write for school. Instead, I write for me.
  • Jenelle
  • My name has a Hebrew origin. It is 1 word and 7 letters. Saying my name is the same as saying god is gracious. That's a nice meaning, and you would think that that's why my mother chose it. This wasn't her reasoning. Instead, she named me after Janelle Penny Commissiong. She was Miss Universe in 1977, and she was the first black woman to ever achieve such a title. She was also, like my mother, Trinidadian. Why wouldn't she name her soon to be iconic daughter after another icon? She changed the Ja to Je, and there she had it. My name. Jenelle.
  • Flatbush
  • I see my neighborhood as the true heart of Brooklyn. You can get hungry, and feel too lazy to cook. Dozens of food options are 5 minutes away on foot. If you want a quick outfit for an event, the clothing stores are right across the street. If you need medicine or medical care, clinics are everywhere you turn. Anything you can think of is conveniently located close by. It's going to be really hard on me when I have to move away. I know no place in the world beats Flatbush.
  • York College: The Good Times
  • I wish I could re-live that first day of college. I can compare the feeling to always riding your bike with training wheels, and someone finally takes it off for you. My brain was constantly thinking, this is my time to shine! I wanted to reinvent myself completely academically. I was a 70's 80's student in high school. My dream was to be a 95's 100's student in college.
  • York College: The Bad Times
  • I started to make progress in college. Not quite 95's and over yet, but I was on my way there with 80's and 85's. One random day in March of 2020, we all had to leave the school because I virus had hit. What we thought would be a view days home, turned into the COVID-19 pandemic that completely altered our learning experience. Class switched to fully online and this was a difficult transition for me. Things got so bad, I ended up just not attending class at all to flunk on purpose. My GPA dropped and I got placed on academic probation. I thought I as doomed.
  • Advice from the Wise
  • My mother noticed how discouraged I was about the academic probation. I remember telling me that mistakes help us grow. I took it upon myself to try harder and right my wrongs. I spent the following semester taking over every single class I was just in. On top of that, paying out of pocket since you lose financial aid onacademic probation. I knew that if I do the classes over and pass they would not keep the fail on my record and I would help my GPA tremendously. That is exactly what I did. I will always appreciate my mom for giving me that hope.
  • On October 16, 2022 I gave birth to my only child, Autumn. She is so perfect I don't think I want another. I hope that one day she can look at me and be proud that I'm her mother. I'm already proud she is my child. I'm excited to watch her grow.
  • The Birth of Autumn
  • New School, New Experience
  • Currently, I am a person that I used to pray about becoming. After solving my probation dilemma in York, I took a well deserved break from school. Once I was ready to return, I decided to transfer to Medgar Evers College. I had no issues with York as a school, I actually loved it there. I just couldn't do that travel to Queens all the time anymore. There isn't much of a social scene in my new school, but it helped me get to the GPA I always hoped for. Currently, I'm at 3.4 and 2.8 was my highest ever in my old school. YAY!
