  • Oedipus steps out of the Royal palace and is greeted by the priest, who are in turn surrounded by the citizens of Thebes. Thebes has been struck by a plague, the citizens are dying, and no one knows how to put an end to it. Oedipus is confused why everyone is gathered around the palace. The Priest asks the king to save Thebes for the citizens of Thebes.
  • You mean the Laios who was king here years ago? (line 124).
  • Yes; King Laios; and the man was one of his herdsmen(line 125).

  • Oedipus sees and unsderstands the terrible fate of Thebes and that no one is more sorrowful than he. Oedipus goes on talking about the murdered king, and believes that Choragos did kill the king. But Choragos goes on to tell that he has not kkilled the king. Teiresias then speaks and saids that Oedipus is the killer.

  • Kreon arrives, and starts telling everyone how king Oedipus has brough heavy accusations towards him. Oedipus then arrives angry because Kreon the murder has came to his house. They then have a dispute between each other, But then Iokaste arrives and tells them about her husband.

  • He is calling for somone to open the doors wide (line 62).
  • Iokaste then enters the altar of Apollo, hoping to stop her husband from thinking about the past and listening to the prophecies. A messenger comes to tell her that Polybus has died of natural causes. This gives hope to Iokaste because Polybus was not killed by his son. Oedipus then comes saying there is one thing that bothers him: his mother.
  • Oedipus wants the Shepherd to come to his palace. The Shepherd arrives and Oedipus demands that he tells him everything he knows about Oedipus' origins. The Shepherd refuses and only gives in when his life is threatened.
  • Choragos sings of the unhappy tale telling the citizens how the most powerful man their king and hero Oedipus. Who was already wealthy and a strong leader has fallen his life in utter shambles. How death is the only thing that will bring happiness to mortals because all life is filled with pain.
