- FOREST MANAGEMENT
- Well, 10% of global forests are within our borders. And Canada's 42% forest. Plus here in Manitoba, this is the boreal forest that covers 80% of Canada's forestland. I doubt we're putting a dent in it.
- As good as this job pays, I'm really wondering if I'm doing the right thing by cutting trees down for a living. It pays the bills, but am I doing harm?
- FOREST MANAGEMENT
- Yeah, forestry is a major source of wealth for Canadians. It doesn't just help us financially, but socially and environmentally if we do it right.
- Well I guess I can't complain. The money's good anyways. I think forestry alone contributes 1.5% to Canada's economy. $35 billion dollars.
- FOREST MANAGEMENT
- Yep. Did you know in 2019 alone, the forest sector supplied 205,000 jobs for Canadians, including 12,000 jobs for Indigenous people?
- I didn't. I'm glad they could employ those who aren't just in it for money, but to protect their home and environment.
- See, now that's where I'm stuck. I'm only a forest worker, there's so much I can do on my own. It's up to the government to implement laws and policies and standards to make sure the forests are safe.
- You're right. But as forest workers, we're allowed to first-handedly practise forestry sustainably!
- Sustainably managed forests! This means there is incentive to manage the forest responsibly, and respectfully. This forest is one. You could tell if it wasn't if it was clear cut or strip & patch cut. This forest is selectively cut. Here, you forest workers cut old trees to make room for new ones and regeneration, to help the sunlight quicken the tree's growth. Also, through trimming branches, vines, and more. All in all, this forest is doing amazing because of your sustainable work!
