- Portia was a rich heiress who lived in Belmont, Near Venice. She had many suitors, but she only loved a young Ventetian named Bassanio. Sadly, he was poor and could not court her.
- So, he went to his friend Antonio. A rich andgenerous merchant. He asked for a sum of money, but Antonio's ships were out at sea. Therefore, he didn't have any money to give, so they decided to go to Shylock, a money-lender.
- Antonio! I need to borrow three thousand ducats.
- Bassanio, all my ships are at sea. We could try borrowing money from Shylock !
- Shylock and Antonio had always hated each other; However, Shylock saw an opportunity in this. He offered to cut a pound of Antonio's flesh if he failed to repay him on time. Antonio agreed, surprising Bassanio with how kind he is. Bassanio was afraid but Antonio reassured him he would be alright.
- Agreed! Everything will be okay, my ships will come back with nine times this debt!
- I will lend you money if you sign a bond. You must repay me on time or I will cut off a pound of flesh from your body.
