- There once was a farmer who was spreading seeds along with his property.
- Some of his seeds fell on a path. Birds quickly ate these seeds.
- Other seeds fell on rocks. These seeds had a limited supply of soil, Thus, it grew too quickly (lacking much support). Sadly, when the Sun came up, the plants were scorched as the plants had no roots
- Several seeds also fell on thorns. Unlike the rest, they grew up and were choked by the neighboring plants.
- Thankfully, there were plenty of seeds that fell on good soil. These seeds produced bountiful crop, (a hundred, sixty, or thirty times what was sown)
- Jesus then interprets this parable for his followers. He explains that the seeds that fell on the path are like the people who hear the gospel of the Kingdom of God and do not understand it. In addition, those who receive the word of God, but do not strengthen their relationship with Him are similar to the seeds that fell on rocks. Contrastingly, the seeds that fell on thrones represent those who hear Jesus’s word but do not listen. Finally, Jesus implores us to be like the good seeds who hears the word of God and understands it.
- “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path... Matthew 13:18
