Melissa's day in the City

- This is Melissa. She has decided to take a walk around her city this afternoon to take advantage of the beautiful weather.
- As she is walking, she comes across a bird perched upon a lamppost 10 feet from where she is standing. She is looking up at the bird at a 57 degree angle and wonders how high up is the bird from the ground. She discovers that tan(57) x 10 = 15.4. This means that the bird is 15 feet above the ground.
- Next, as she continues her walk, she comes across an abandoned basketball while standing on the steps where her eyes are 5 above it and 8 feet away. While she is looking down at the basketball, she wonders at what angle of depression she is seeing the ball. She realizes that tan -1 (5/8) = 32.005. This means that the angle of depression is 32 degrees.
- Melissa then decides that she is going to go to the basketball court with the new ball that she found to practice her shooting.
- At the basketball court, Melissa sees that the top of the basketball hoop is 6 feet above eye level, and her arms in throwing position are at an angle of elevation of 47 degrees. She wants to know the distance the ball would have to travel between her hands and the hoop. She knows that 6/sin(47) = 8.204. This means that the ball would need to travel 8 feet at an angle of elevation to reach the hoop.
- After the long and eventful day Melissa had, she decides to head home to have some pizza.
