The carthaginians continued into the first battle of the Punic war, the battle of Trebia, in December of 218 BC. In this war, Hannibal continued with his mind trcks to control the Romans, and instead of just heading into battle, he sent the cavalry to provoke the romans and have them lead them to the rest of the troops. There, the rest of the army was hiding in bushes, waiting for the perfect time to attack. The Romans, led by Sempronius were overconfident, which helped lead to their loss in this battle.
Haha. Too easy.

After a huge win in Trebia, Carthage was confident that they would be able to beat the Romans again, so after their enemies rebuilt their army, they strategized another battle where they hid in the mountains surrounding Lake Trasimene, waiting for the Romans once again to walk right into their trap.
Surround them and push them in the lake!

Back in Rome, the Romans finally realized how big of a threat Hannibal truly was. For this reason, they decided to enact a policy, where instead of 2 leaders serving for 1 year, they chose one dictator to have complete authority over everyone, so they could hopefully win this war. This leader was Fabius Maximus, but unfortunately, others did not agree with his methods.
Ok, so we now know that Carthage has a really good army, and a really smart and manipulative leader, so what if we instead just back down, watch, and wait for their food and water to run out so we can fight them at their weakest?
But that goes against everything us Romans stand for! We need to attack first!
