- The proletariat moved to the cities to work in factories. They didn't want to pay for a ride on the turnpikes, to go back and forth.

- The working class suffered inequity compared to the middle class. The middle class lived nice lives, the cult of domesticity was supported, and they didn't live in small tenements near pollution creating factories. They also believed the poor were responsible for their own lifestyle.
- The working class had to work in really harsh conditions, and live in tenements that is close to the factories. the homes they lived in were tightly spaced. people weren't the cleanest either.
- As factories were being built, many people were willing to work. Employers could set wages as low as they wanted because people were willing to do work as long as they got paid. People got hurt as well, and when they got sick or injured, they lost their job.
- People working, and living in the tenements nearby were exposed to breathing coal dust and lint. Cholera spread because of the lack of hygiene. Orphans and children as young as 5 yrs worked with unsafe machines for 12-16 hours daily.
- Standard of living improved, labor unions came together to protest for the harsh conditions. Mutual-aid society was an improvement made. The social gospel also was a movement that campaigned for reforms in housing, health care, and education.
