- . He vomits and has diarrhea (loose stools). ... The bear simply examines him and goes back to eating berries. Brian runs away but then realizes that the bear did not want to attack him.

- Chapter 8, Brian wakes up in the middle of the night to a hissing sound and a terrible smell in his little shelter.. The hatchet misses, hitting the wall and making a shower of sparks, and the creature gets closer. It's not a snake, it's a porcupine.

- In Chapter 9 of Hatchet, Brian works on his fire. He tries to use the twenty dollar bill as kindling, starter fuel for fire, but it does not work. ... This almost works, but Brian realizes that he needs to increase the oxygen on the fire by blowing on the sparks. This works and Brian finally has his fire.
- In Chapter 10 of Hatchet,Brian takes careful care of his fire, only leaving it to get more wood. He spends the day carrying limbs from the forest to his camp. He also notices that the fire will help keep the mosquitoes away and can also be used to create a smoke signal.
- In chapter 11, Brian takes care of a few chores in order to stay occupied and not be tempted to wallow in despair. He works on his smoke signal and takes a few moments to reflect on how he has changed. His body is different as he thins down from lack of food.
- Chapter 12. Brian spends many hours perfecting his fish spear, but in the end it fails to help him catch any fish. In need of a way to send the spear into the water, Brian decides to make a bow and arrow. While searching for wood, Brian almost steps on a bird and it flies up in a flurry of feathers.
