- The Relationship Between Serfs and Lords

- Papa, why do we have to work for our miserable Lord? He complains so much and we have so little. He lives in that castle while we share one room.
- Now son, you know that the Lord protects us during war and if we work hard, he will grant us our own small plot to harvest.
- I think I hear the trouboadour coming...I should get back to the party!
- Is this a great party or what? My serfs did an excellent job on the harvest.
- It is feudal!
- Speaking of serfs, how much do you have to give them in exchange for their work? My serfs are asking for more privileges.
- As little as possible! I keep them safe and let them farm a small portion of my land. They also must pay me taxes and they can't leave without my permission.
- Do you let them grind their grain wherever they want?
- Of course not, they have to grind their grain at my mill and buy their supplies from my stores.
- Are you done yet, serfs? I need those fields harvested now. I am having a big party tonight for all of the neighboring Lords.
