- Hey, have you heard what is going on in Russia with the Bolsheviks?
- No, I haven't, and who are the Bolsheviks?
- The Bolsheviks are the Russians who took over in the Russian Revolution. They are lead by Vladimir Lenin.
- Well what is going on with them?
- The Bolsheviks, aka the Reds. are promoting communism. They are opposed by the Whites, who are monarchists and militarists who are against the ideas of communism.
- Oh, that's a lot of information. But why does this concern us?
- This concerns our country because we do not want it to come here. All of the violence and communism is not what we want here. We want freedom!
- Oh, I see now! Is there anything else you can tell me?
- Yes, much more! It has already affected us as the Department of Justice is going to be going around performing Palmer Raids. This means they will arrest any suspicious socialists.
- Indeed! Charles Schenck was accused of conspiracy to violate the Espionage Act of 1917. He claimed this accusation violated his 1st amendment.
- Wow, that's crazy! Have they punished anyone?
- Wow, did they get anyone else?
- I agree with this, we cannot let communism come to America!
- Yes, the Gitlow Cases. These consisted of all cases regarding all American socialists/communists who were convicted of speaking about or publishing any incendiary ideas.
