  • Hey there traveler! I'm your guide, Thalia Time-Traveler. Let's look back in time and learn about the Separation of Powers.
  • Alright, here we are! The writing of the Constitution. Here it was decided that the three branches would all be equal in power. But what does "Separation of Powers" mean?
  • Imagine this situation. The Executive Branch has thought about a law about employment. This branch is made of the President and his cabinet. They can veto laws, negotiate treaties, and appoint officials, among other things.
  • The other branches must approve the law as well in order to let it take effect. It seems like the Judicial Branch, which is in charge of declaring if laws or actions go against the Constitution, approves. One more branch to get approval- Legislative!
  • The Legislative branch is in charge of approving treaties, declaring war, impeaching officials, creating lower federal courts, and more. They decide that the law is not fit. If the Executive Branch would have vetoed a law, this branch would be able to override the President's (Executive Branch) veto.
  • In other words, the Separation of Powers refers to the responsibilities of each branch of the government. Each branch has certain jobs they have to take care of, especially when it comes to making laws and military issues. That's it for today. Until next time, traveler!
