- I want to know about the fence...I want to know why its there.
- What is it anyway? What do you want to know?
- What's so wrong with us that we can't go oover there and play?
- No... I don't understand why we're not allowed on the other side of it.

- Bruno started thinking more and more about the two sides of the fence and the reason it was there. Bruno then decided to talk to the Hopeless Case
- Bruno...The fence isn't there to stop us from going over there.
- Its to stop them from coming over here.
- Gretel was sitting at her dressing table, experimenting with her hair. She sounded annoyed when Bruno wanted to ask her something.
- With their families, you mean?
- Because they have to be kept together.
- Well, yes, with their families. But with their own kind too.
- Gretel stared at Bruno and started laughing but only to stop when she noticed that Bruno was being serious about the fence.

- Gretel started talking in a childish voice, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

- In this part, Gretel sounded tired explaining the same thing over and over again to Bruno
- What do you mean, their own kind?
- Gretel sighed, replying to more of Brunos questions. Bruno also started repeating, saying 'Jews'
