- Odysseus and his crew beach on the island of the cyclops. He ordered 12 of his best men to come with him in search of food while the rest watched the ship. Odysseus brought irresisttable wine with him in a bag in case the brute cyclops would come upon them during their journey.
- "stand by and keep watch over the ship"
- The crew climbed inside the cave with the cyclops outside tending to his sheep. The crew begged to take cheeses that they found and even build a tire as an offering. But then the cyclops came in and closed the door to the door to the cave with a big rock no mortal can move. Then suddenly he saw them in a small glance at the fire.
- "Strangers, who are you? And where from? What brings you here by sea ways - a fair traffic? Or are you wandering rogues, who cast your lives like dice, and ravage other folk by sea?"
- The cyclops clutched the men in his hands and beat their brains out. Odysseus and his remaining men cried out to Zeus and then suddenly Odysseus came up with a plan to kill the cyclops by stabbing his eye, but it had to wait till the next morning.
