- Lily and her mom were at the mall. Lily wanted to try on a shirt so they found a man who could help them. "Mommy" asked Lily, "Is that man a kid?" "No Lily," replied her mom, "Jack is an adult like me, but he has a genetic condition called Achondroplasia."
- "That's true," Jack said. "I am much shorter than other adults because my arms and legs are not as long,which is commonly known as dwarfism, but I am just as smart. How can I help you?" Lily's mom smiled. "Can we please have one of those blue shirts, Lily would like to try one on?"
- On the way home in the car, Lily asked her mom a question, "Does Jack's kids also have achondroplasia?" "Well, there is a 50% chance of the disease being passed down, but actually 80% of cases of achondroplasia actually are caused by a mutation in the FGFR3 gene." "Oh," said Lily, "Does that mean a lot of people have it?" "Only about 1 in 15,000-40,000 people actually do." Answered her mom.
- The next day Lily was walking to school with her dad, and on the way Lily saw a woman with achondroplasia. "Hi," Lily said, "My name is Lily." "I'm Rose," the woman answered, "I'm on my way to watch a football game. It's too bad I can't play."
- "Oh, why not?" asked Lily"Because it could hurt my spine, but don't worry, otherwise I live a normal life except for frequent ear infections and sleep apnea, which means my breathing stops sometimes when I am sleeping. Also there is a higher risk of death for babies in their first year, and a higher risk of heart disease when I get much older."
- "Wow," said Lily's dad, "Is that hard for you?""Achondroplasia doesn't affect me mentally, only physically. But the average height for a woman is 4 ft. 1 and for a man is 4 ft 4, so it is still hard to be so much shorter than everyone else, except kids!""Yeah, " said Lily, smiling"See you later" said Rose"Bye!"
